When to consider euthanizing your dog

We love our chihuahuas and all of our dogs, but sometimes, it’s time to let them go.  This can be one of the hardest decisions we make in life.  A very good friend of mine had to tell me that it was time to let my Bailey go at the age of 16.  She was right.  I was too close to see it.

If you’re in a similar position or dreading the decision, here’s some information that may help you along.

Are you considering euthanasia for your dog?

Are you still torn between whether you should do this or not?

Well, the below piece will throw more light on what you should consider when thinking of euthanizing your dog or not.

Before delving into this, it is important to define what euthanasia really means.

Pet Euthanasia means ‘mercy killing’ where pets are killed painlessly and silently to prevent them from continuous suffering.

It was derived from the Greek word meaning “good death”. Good in the sense that the pets are spared from the agony of painful death.

Debating whether euthanasia for your pet should be done or not is always a very complicated debate.

Proponents of pet euthanasia insist that it is better for your pet to die painlessly and silently than to go through unimaginable agony and still die at the end of it.

They wonder why you should be cruel to watch your pet suffer many days, weeks or even months of agony- when you can help it end its life silently and painlessly.

To these proponents of euthanasia in pets, they feel it is much cruel to allow your pet suffer and still die than it is to painlessly end its life via ’silent killing’.

The opponents of pet euthanasia on the other hand see the act as cruelty of the highest order.

Their reasoning is- why wickedly kill these pets when they could still have a chance to survive?

Whichever party you belong to is not important. What is important is how you feel about it all. I personally feel that this issue of pet euthanasia is a touchy issue that only you can decide whether you want it or not.

If you don’t want it, then it is your duty to ensure that your pet does not suffer too much in its present condition. Do all you can to ensure it get the best attention from your vet doctor while it is still alive.

And if you support and want pet euthanasia, then see your veterinary doctor for the best way to do this that will ensure your pet doesn’t feel any pain.

Most pet euthanasia is just by injecting your dog and it will ‘go to sleep’ (as it is often referred) within a short time. There is hardly ever any sign of struggle in your dog after the euthanasia is administered. It would instead gradually fall into a silent state- like a deep sleep- until it losses it’s breath and goes limp- all painlessly done.

If you really feel a lot of love for your pet and want it to be decently buried after the euthanasia, then make sure you don’t leave it with the veterinarian doctor after it is done. Some of these veterinarian doctors actually use these pets for experiments after the euthanasia.

So, either you take your dog along with you for burial or cremation or you get the word of the veterinarian that it will be buried or cremated and not used for experiment.

Pet Food Recall

Copy of the letter from Debra Chow Mars PetCare regarding the recall.

Today, we’re announcing a voluntary recall of selected bags of PEDIGREE Small Crunchy Bites Complete Nutrition and PEDIGREE Large Breed Food For Dogs, both of which are made in our Everson, PA facility. Thankfully, there haven’t been any reports of pets being affected by our food in this recall; however, we feel we must take this action as a precautionary measure after we were alerted of a possible link between dry dog pet food produced at the Everson plant and two isolated cases of people infected by Salmonella Schwarzengrund.

While none of the pet foods found in the homes were determined to contain Salmonella, the strain of Salmonella Schwarzengrund involved in the illnesses was detected in the Everson plant where some PEDIGREE products are produced.

You should know that we have numerous facilities throughout the country and Everson represents a very small portion of our manufacturing base (2.7%) of total PEDIGREE production. Rest assured, you can continue to have confidence in the quality and safety of products produced at all our other facilities.

We realize how important dogs are to your family. We are dog lovers too. And implementing this safety measure immediately is the best way we can protect them, their owners and the families who feed and trust PEDIGREE.

Please know we are doing all we can to make sure that these foods are no longer on store shelves. If, however, you believe you have purchased products affected by this voluntary recall, please return the product to the store where you purchased it for a full refund. If you want more information on specific product details and other information please visit www.petcare.mars.com

As the makers of PEDIGREE, our number one priority has always been, and continues to be, the health and welfare of pets and their owners.

Sincerely
Debra Crew

Toy Dog Breeds: Man’s Best Friend

Dogs are indeed cute and cuddly. They also serve as man’s best friends. Nowadays, different dogs are making a scene everywhere. It is even a form of fashion for some celebrities.

A toy dog is actually a petite dog which is quite small when compared to working dogs. It is safe to determine toy dogs by their size although it is quite confusing since there is still no guaranteed facts which state that height and weight is considered in classifying a dog as a toy.

Some of the toy breeds are Pomeranian, Pug, Shih Tzu, Poodle, Papillion and the likes. These toy dogs are beautiful and charming and they also represent an important role in people’s lives. Although they are small, they also have the capability to hunt and eliminate pest animals.

Some of these toy dogs also serve as man’s guardians. They also bark at people whom they are not familiar with. They can be as tough as the other large dogs.

The most fascinating thing about toys dogs is their affective capability wherein they can fill the needs of sad and lonely individuals and the adults. They are also known for helping those that are in depressed state of mind through manifesting care and of course happiness. They also have impetuous instincts which help in providing all the friendship and as well as affection, and in turn gives new meaning to people’s lives.

A legend states that when a noble Aztec was about to die, a Chihuahua is used as a sacrifice to transmigrate the sins of the noble man to the sacrificed dog, which in turn avoids the noble man from divine punishment. The Chinese religion, which is Buddhism, has a lion symbol meaning a sacred nation. They used the Pekinese dog to represent as lions because they have no lions back then and the Pekinese dogs have the closest resemblance to it.

There are lots of breeders of the toy dogs who keep their cute puppies for about ten to twelve weeks old rather selling or distributing them at about eight to nine weeks. They also consider the family before selling it. More often than not, they will not sell it to family with too many kids and even to those who has hyper active child.

Generally, toy dogs are very easy to take care of. There are some who needs heavy grooming such as the Shih-Tzu, Terrier and Pomeranian. The Toy Poodle, Japanese Chin and Toy Spaniel on the other hand require only a moderate grooming. While other toy dogs do not require any grooming at all.

The basic and most important thing to remember is to maintain the long and fine hairs free from tangles to prevent pain and other skin problems that your dog may acquire. You don’t want to shell out big bucks of money for veterinary cost in the end, don’t you?

The production of toy dogs is by mass production when compared to larger breeds. Some distributors can just put their little Chihuahuas on a shopping cart or chicken cage and they are easy to deliver when compared to the larger ones like the German shepherd. The downside of buying toy dogs in a pet shop is that most often than not they are quite difficult to house train.

There are some toy dog breeds that are crossbred to other breeds to produce a -poo dog breed. So for those consumers who want to buy a purebred toy dogs, beware of such -poo breeds. They look like the other toy dogs but then they differ in attitude sometimes. Some of these -poo dogs are ill-tempered, hyper and yappy.

Is it possible to train the toy dogs with regards to their attitude? Absolutely, yes! The best way to teach your toy dogs with manners is through obedience commands. You should teach your dog on how to obey such as for example, if he is about to do something bad or any inappropriate act, you should reprimand him with a firm NO!

By doing so, you’re practicing the dog to acquaint himself from knowing what is okay to do from not. Your “no” should always catch his attention. But then remember also to acknowledge the good things that your toy dog will do. A simple saying of “good boy” with a piece of his favorite snack will do the trick.
